How to Get Your NDIS Worker Screening Check in Tasmania (TAS)

Planning to work in the NDIS sector in Tasmania? You’ll need an NDIS Worker Screening Check, which is managed a little differently here. In Tasmania, the check is issued as an NDIS endorsement on your Registration to Work with Vulnerable People (RWVP).

This post explains how to apply, what you need, the cost, and how long it takes to get your NDIS clearance in TAS.

📝 What Is the NDIS Worker Screening Check?

In Tasmania, the NDIS Worker Screening Check is included as part of your RWVP registration — the same system used for Working with Children checks. You must be registered with an NDIS endorsement before working in risk-assessed roles for registered NDIS providers.

🔍 How to Apply in TAS

  1. Apply online through the Department of Justice:

    • Begin your application here.

    • Select Apply

    • Fill out your details

    • Make sure to select “Registration to Work with Vulnerable People” and tick the NDIS endorsement option.

  2. Visit a Service Tasmania centre within 14 days:

    • Bring your application reference number and original identity documents.

    • Staff will verify your identity and take your photo.

  3. Pay the applicable fee (if not already paid online).

  4. Wait for the Department of Justice to process your application.

📄 What Documents You Need

You’ll need to bring:

  • 1 Commencement of Identity document (e.g. full birth certificate or passport)

  • 1 Primary Use in Community document (e.g. driver licence)

  • 2 Secondary Use documents (e.g. Medicare card, utility bill)

  • Proof of name change, if relevant

A full ID guide is available here.

If you’re under 18, a parent or guardian must attend and provide their ID too.

💰 How Much Does It Cost?

  • Employment/Volunteer class: $130.90

  • Volunteer only class: $22.44

  • Upgrade from volunteer to employment: $108.46

  • Card replacement (if lost): $46.75

Full fee details can be found here.

⏳ How Long Does It Take?

  • Standard processing time: Up to 6 weeks

  • Simple applications may be processed sooner

  • If you’ve applied via paper or need a name change verified, it may take longer

Important: You can’t start work in a risk-assessed role until your NDIS endorsement has been granted.

🔐 Key Tips to Remember

  • The endorsement is valid for 5 years and covers you across Australia

  • You’ll receive a physical RWVP card with NDIS listed if endorsed

  • No endorsement = no legal right to work in certain NDIS roles

  • If you already have an RWVP card, you can apply to add the NDIS endorsement
