How to Get Your NDIS Worker Screening Check in South Australia (SA)

If you’re working in the NDIS sector in South Australia, you’ll need an NDIS Worker Screening Check before starting in a risk-assessed role. This screening helps ensure that people working with participants don’t pose a risk and is mandatory for many NDIS roles.

In SA, the check is handled by the Department of Human Services (DHS) and is done entirely online.

This post breaks down how to apply, what you need, the cost, and how long it takes.

📝 What Is the NDIS Worker Screening Check?

The NDIS Worker Screening Check assesses whether a worker is cleared to deliver NDIS supports. If you’re working for a registered NDIS provider in a risk-assessed role, you’re legally required to have it. Some unregistered providers and self-managed participants may also require you to obtain one.

🔍 How to Apply in SA

  1. Apply online via the DHS Screening Unit by clicking here.

    • Select "Start Now".

  2. Verify your identity online or via print-and-verify:

    • Most applicants can use online verification (via Document Verification Service).

    • If not, you can use the print-and-verify method with a Justice of the Peace or your employer.

  3. Pay the application fee (if applicable).

  4. Your employer must verify your application:

    • They’ll receive an alert in the NDIS Worker Screening Database.

    • They must verify that you’re engaged (or about to be) in an NDIS role.

  5. Wait for your clearance to be processed.

📄 What Documents You Need

You’ll need to verify your identity using:

  • At least one photo ID (e.g. passport or driver’s licence)

  • One Commencement of Identity document (e.g. birth certificate or citizenship certificate)

  • Other documents such as Medicare card, bank statement, or utility bill

More info on identification documents can be found here.

If your employer invited you to apply, they can verify your identity. If not, use a JP or authorised verifier.

💰 How Much Does It Cost?

  • Paid workers: $117

  • Volunteers: Free

  • Students on placement: May be eligible for a $64.50 concession for multiple checks

For more information on fees can be found here.

⏳ How Long Does It Take?

  • Most straightforward applications are processed within 1–4 weeks

  • Applications involving criminal history or “assessable information” may take longer

  • Your application won’t begin processing until your employer verifies it

It’s recommended to apply well before your start date.

🔐 Key Tips to Remember

  • Your clearance is valid Australia-wide for 5 years

  • You’ll receive your result by email — no physical card is issued

  • You can’t work in a risk-assessed role until cleared

  • You can apply for multiple clearances at once (e.g. WWCC + NDIS)
