How to Get Your NDIS Worker Screening Check in Queensland (QLD)

If you’re working (or planning to work) in the NDIS sector in Queensland, you’ll need an NDIS Worker Screening Check before starting in a risk-assessed role. In QLD, the process is slightly different from other states and involves verifying your identity through the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR).

This post breaks down how to apply, what documents you need, costs, and how long it takes to get your check in Queensland.

📝 What Is the NDIS Worker Screening Check?

The NDIS Worker Screening Check determines whether a person who works with people with disability poses an unacceptable risk. It’s mandatory if you work for a registered NDIS provider in a risk-assessed role, and some unregistered providers may also require it.

🔍 How to Apply in QLD

Here’s the process:

  1. Get a TMR Customer Reference Number (CRN):

    • This is required to verify your identity.

    • If you hold a QLD driver licence or photo ID, you already have a CRN.

    • If not, you must visit a TMR service centre to get one.

  2. Register for the online Worker Screening portal:

  3. Complete your online application:

    • Fill in personal details, provide your employer's NDIS registration info, and upload any required documents (including a passport-style photo).

  4. Pay the fee online.

  5. Employer verification:

    • Your employer will be notified and must verify your application in the system within 30 days.

  6. Wait for your application to be processed.

📄 What Documents You Need

  • Your QLD CRN (via your QLD driver’s licence or after visiting TMR).

  • A passport-style photo (clear, against a plain background).

You’ll also need to provide your:

  • Address history (past 5 years)

  • Previous names (if applicable)

  • NDIS provider or participant details

💰 How Much Does It Cost?

  • NDIS Check only (paid workers): $147

  • NDIS Check only (volunteers): Free

  • Combined NDIS + Blue Card (paid): $162

  • Combined NDIS + Blue Card (volunteer): Free

Full fee info can be found here

⏳ How Long Does It Take?

  • Most applications are processed within a few days to a few weeks after employer verification.

  • Applications that involve criminal history or “assessable information” may take longer.

  • You cannot start work until you receive your clearance and your employer has verified you.

Processing won’t begin until:

  • You’ve paid the fee

  • Your employer has verified the application

🔐 Key Tips to Remember

  • Clearance is valid for 5 years and recognized Australia-wide.

  • You’ll receive a physical NDIS clearance card in the mail once approved.

  • QLD has a strict “no clearance, no start” policy.

  • You can combine the NDIS Check with a Blue Card to save time.
