How to Get Your NDIS Worker Screening Check in the Northern Territory (NT)

If you're working in the NDIS sector in the Northern Territory, you’ll need an NDIS Worker Screening Check before starting in a risk-assessed role. This check is administered by SAFE NT, a unit of the Northern Territory Police.

📝 What Is the NDIS Worker Screening Check?

The NDIS Worker Screening Check ensures people working with NDIS participants do not pose an unacceptable risk. In the NT, this check is mandatory if you're working in a risk-assessed role with a registered NDIS provider.

SAFE NT is responsible for processing applications in the NT.

🔍 How to Apply in the NT

  1. Create a SAFE NT online account:

  2. Complete the online application form:

    • Provide your personal details, residential address history, and employer details.

    • Upload 4 identity documents and a recent passport-style photo.

    • If applying as a volunteer, you must also upload a completed Volunteer Declaration Form.

  3. Pay the applicable fee online.

  4. Your employer must verify your application in the national NDIS Worker Screening Database.

  5. Wait for SAFE NT to process and notify you of the outcome.

You’ll need to upload:

  • 4 ID documents (meeting commencement, primary, and secondary ID categories)

  • A passport-style photo (clear image, plain background — selfie allowed if meets criteria)

  • Proof of name change (if applicable)

  • Volunteer Declaration Form (if applying as a volunteer)

  • Straightforward applications: processed in a few days to 2 weeks

  • Applications requiring further assessment: may take several weeks or longer

Note: SAFE NT will not start processing until your:

  • Payment is complete

  • Employer has verified your application

  • Identity documents are approved

  • Clearance is valid Australia-wide for 5 years

  • You’ll receive a physical clearance card by mail

  • If you already have clearance from another state, you don’t need to reapply — it’s nationally portable
