Big Changes May Be Coming for NDIS Providers — Here's What You Need to Know
If you’re currently delivering NDIS supports without being a registered provider, you’ve likely heard the whispers:
The government might soon require all NDIS providers to be registered.
It’s not confirmed across the board yet, but the direction is clear — and now is the time to start preparing.
Here’s what we know, what’s still unfolding, and how Provider Partners can support you through it.
Why This Shift Is Happening
The NDIS was built on flexibility and participant choice. Many providers — especially sole traders and small businesses — have operated without registering by supporting participants who self-manage or use a plan manager.
But in recent years, there’s been growing concern about:
Gaps in quality and safety oversight
High-profile cases of neglect and fraud
Inconsistent standards across the market
To respond, the government has started moving toward stronger regulation and greater oversight of all NDIS providers.
🗓 What’s Actually Changing?
In 2023, the major independent NDIS Review recommended that all providers be registered in some form, using a tiered system based on the type and risk level of services.
The government accepted this direction — and in 2024, the NDIS Provider and Worker Registration Taskforce was created to figure out how it should work.
They’ve since recommended:
A 5-tier model, from low-risk “basic” registration to more intensive certification
A new national worker registration system
Starting with three key provider groups:
- Platform providers
- Support Coordinators
- SIL (Supported Independent Living) providers
These provider types will be required to register under new rules by July 2025.
What happens next?
It’s expected that more provider types — including support workers, therapy providers, and other unregistered services — will be included in future phases.
The full rollout and exact timelines are still being worked out, but it’s clear that change is on the horizon.
What Does This Mean If You're Unregistered?
We get it, the idea of mandatory registration can feel overwhelming, especially if you’ve built a successful business working with self- or plan-managed clients.
You might be asking:
Will I need to register?
What will the process involve?
Can I afford the cost?
What tier would I fall into?
The truth is: you don’t need to panic, but you do need to prepare.
